If you’re struggling with sun damage, redness, uneven skin tone, or signs of aging, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy might be the skin solution you’ve been looking for. This non-invasive treatment is loved for its ability to target multiple concerns — all with minimal downtime.
At Ashburn Laser & Skincare MedSpa, IPL is one of our most requested treatments — and for good reason. Here’s everything you need to know before booking your first session.
What Is IPL?
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light therapy, is a light-based treatment that targets pigmentation, redness, and unwanted hair by delivering short bursts of broad-spectrum light deep into the skin.
Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength, IPL uses multiple wavelengths to treat a variety of skin issues at once — making it one of the most versatile aesthetic tools available.
What Does IPL Treat?
IPL is ideal for addressing:
- Â Sun damage & age spots
- Â Rosacea & facial redness
- Â Uneven skin tone
- Enlarged pores
- Broken capillaries
- Fine lines and dullness
- Acne-related pigmentation
- Unwanted hair (on lighter skin types)
What Happens During the Treatment?
Your provider will begin by cleansing your skin and applying a cooling gel. Using a handheld IPL device, they’ll pass light pulses over the targeted areas.
You may feel a light snapping sensation — similar to a rubber band against the skin — but most clients find it very tolerable. Sessions usually take 20–45 minutes, depending on the treatment area.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
While many clients notice results after just one session, a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart is typically recommended for the best results.
You’ll continue to see improvements over time as your skin renews itself.
Is There Any Downtime?
One of the biggest perks of IPL is that there’s minimal to no downtime. Some redness or mild swelling may occur right after your session, but most clients return to their daily routine immediately.
Pigmentation may temporarily darken before flaking or fading — this is a normal and expected part of the healing process.
How Do I Prepare & Care for My Skin?
Before IPL:
- Avoid sun exposure for 1–2 weeks
- Discontinue retinoids and exfoliants 3–5 days prior
- Let us know about any medications you’re taking
After IPL:
- Stay out of the sun and use SPF 30+ daily
- Keep skin moisturized and avoid heat (like saunas) for 48 hours
- Don’t pick at flaking pigment — let your skin shed naturally
Who Is a Good Candidate?
IPL works best on light to medium skin tones and may not be suitable for very dark or deeply tanned skin. That’s why a consultation is key — we’ll assess your skin and make sure IPL is safe and effective for you.
